West Africa is undoubtedly one of the most unknown, diverse and exciting geographical areas on the planet. Origin of all the great Portuguese, French and English expeditions to the interior regions of the continent and center of colonial activity and slave trade until the 19th century. Our route begins in Abidjan and from there Elmina first castle, which we will always follow along the coast. This exciting route runs from north to south four countries with three different colonial inheritances. From the Baobabs forests of Ivory Coast to the lush jungles of Benin and Togo. In between, Ghana, British Redoubt and cradle of the famous port of Elmina. Colonial cities heritage of humanity with its past of slavery and suffering.

Day 1: Arrival in Abidjan
It is the main urban center of the country, with its skyscrapers that rise above the Ébrié lagoon. Modern sites of interest include the Pyramid, a building reminiscent of a ziggurat. St. Paul’s Cathedral is an inclined structure attached to a large cross. Works of art, cultural relics and crafts are displayed in the Museum of Civilizations in Ivory Coast.

Day 2: Abidjan / Grand Bassam
Grand Bassam is known for its busy palm-lined beach, which runs along the Atlantic coast. The old town, which dates back to the French colonial era, once was the capital of the country, is home to many ruined houses of the 19th and 20th centuries. Traditional dresses are displayed in the former governor’s palace in the National Costume Museum.

Day 3: Elmina
Visit of the castle and the local fishermen’s market. Visit of the fort of the Cape coast. The forts Saint Georges de la Mine and Saint-Jacques remember the antiquity of the European implantation and the bitterness of the struggles in what was one of the largest centers of African slave trade.

Day 4: Accra
We will visit the Kwame Nkrumah park, the Nkrumah mausoleum, the Makola market, Labadi and the Kokrobite beach are popular places by the ocean. The nightlife is very lively.

Day 5: Lomé
Trip to Lomé (Togo) Night in Lomé.

Day 6: Lomé
We will visit the Museum of Independence, the Government Building, the National Museum and the Voodoo Market of Akodésséwa.

Day 7: Ouidah
Visit the Python temple, excursion on the slave route and the «door of no return».

Day 8: Ganvié / Porto Novo
Visit of the town by boat. Return to the vehicle and continue to Porto Novo. Porto-Novo is a port city and the capital of Benin, West Africa. It is known for its colonial buildings such as the Great Mosque, Brazilian style, which was once a church. The ethnographic museum exhibits musical instruments, costumes and ceremonial masks.

Day 9: Abomey
Historic capital of Benin. Visit to the Abomey Museum and the royal palaces. It is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1985.

Day 10: Abomey / Cotonou
Visit to the great Dantokpa Market, where religious objects and spices are sold along with everyday objects. And to the Cotonou Cathedral.

Day 11: Cotonou
Visit Cotonou, and transfer to the airport.

LEVEL:
Travel by road in a region without sophisticated tourist infrastructure. Fairly comfortable, but with a need for the traveller to be flexible regarding the itinerary / timings etc. Can be hot and dusty at times. The rewards are being in a country that remains off the beaten tourist track, and being rich in diverse culture.

ACCOMMODATION:
10 hotel nights. The accommodation is based on room sharing. Individual travelers must pay only one supplement. If you prefer to share, we will try to relate it to another individual traveler of the same sex.
